By 1874, the Central Carolina Railroad was roaring through the community, and the name of the town was changed to Matthews in honor of Edward Watson Matthews, a director with the railroad company. After the Civil War, a sawmill popped up in the area and several homes and businesses followed. In 1825, the city became known as Fullwood, named for the local postmaster, John Miles Fullwood. This led to the community’s first name, Stumptown. Cotton farming was big in the area in those days, and a community of settlers chopped down several trees in the wooded area to set up more farms. While Matthews has taken advantage of the metropolitan area’s growth in recent decades, its own history dates back to the 1800s. The Charlotte area has a rich history that dates back to the 1700s and includes the nation's first gold rush, a thriving textile industry, and, most recently, becoming the second-largest banking and financial city in the United States. Several golf and country clubs are located in the area, and the beautiful Lake Wylie is just about 20 miles to the west, making for a perfect weekend getaway. The city is just 10 miles from Uptown with several major roads and bus service available to get you there for work or play. Many people choose to live in Matthews because of its proximity to Charlotte's business and entertainment opportunities. In North Carolina, it has been named one of the "top 10 places to retire" and one of the "top ten best cities." It has been called one of the "most exciting suburbs" and one of the "top ten suburban cities" in the United States. Once a sleepy farming community, Matthews is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States, and that might have a little something to do with some of the city's awards and accolades. The community-oriented city is located just southeast of Charlotte and just within Interstate 485's boundaries. Mr Biden told White House reporters on Saturday he was “hoping that over the next several months, I’ll be meeting with Xi again and talking about legitimate differences we have, but also how … to get along”.Despite its massive growth since the 1990s, Matthews, North Carolina still feels like something of a small town. “Under the current world situation, we can carry out various activities that benefit our two countries, the people of our countries, and the entire human race.” “I believe that the foundation of Sino-US relations lies in the people,” Mr Xi said to Mr Gates. Mr Xi offered a hint of a possible willingness to reduce tensions, saying in a meeting with Microsoft Corporation co-founder Bill Gates on Friday that the US and China can co-operate to “benefit our two countries”. Mr Biden and Mr Xi had made commitments to improve communications “precisely so that we can make sure we are communicating as clearly as possible to avoid possible misunderstandings and miscommunications,” Mr Blinken said on Friday. The US wants to make sure “that the competition we have with China doesn’t veer into conflict” due to avoidable misunderstandings, he told reporters. Shortly before leaving, Mr Blinken emphasised the importance of the US and China establishing and maintaining better lines of communication. US secretary of state Antony Blinken plans to meet with Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang on Sunday. US officials said before Mr Blinken’s departure from Washington on Friday that he would raise each of them, though neither side has shown any inclination to back down on their positions. Mr Blinken will also be pressing the Chinese to release detained American citizens and to take steps to curb the production and export of fentanyl precursors that are fuelling the opioid crisis in the United States. The list of disagreements and potential conflict points is long: ranging from trade with Taiwan, human rights conditions in China and Hong Kong, as well as the Chinese military assertiveness in the South China Sea to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Prospects for any significant breakthrough on the most vexing issues facing the planet’s two largest economies are slim, as ties have grown increasingly fraught in recent years.Īnimosity and recriminations have steadily escalated over a series of disagreements that have implications for global security and stability.
